I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ .

Big box of foam and tape ????
My wild thing 46" MK4 has arived, and thought how hard can it be to build.. But as never built a plane etc before. And most of the instruction are Text and not alot of pritty Pictures.
Also where are all the nuts, bolts, bearing
I've got a few servos lying around, so got a 2 choices
JR NES 537 Analog 3.1kg
Futaba S3152 Digital 4.9Kg
Got lots of recivers.. Specky ones... 3 options
Ar6200 DSM2 with a satilite
ar6210 DSMX with a satilite
Ar6115e park flyer
Or should save them and get an orange one
Would like some tips.. do & dont's... How to tape together. Basicly how the bl@~dy hell do you build this thing (Properly)
Cheers

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
Ok, Listen .... you don't want anything fancy or expensive in a wildthing coz you will no doubt be involved in "close & very very close oposite diriction formation flying"! if you catch my drift without using the "C" word
I can't remember what sevos I put in mine but they were like suitcases but that's all you need, strong rugged gear.
Iv'e used the Ar 5000 Reciever but only because I had one spare thanks to Tim helping me reduce the amount of models I had! but I know that Tim has flown models up the orme with "Parkzone type recievers, I personally wouldn't but I was impressed with the range of the smaller rx's. I expect Tim will jump in with a more refined radio instalation suggestion.
As for the build, again nothing fancy, unless of course you want to. As per the instructions, mark the center of the spar and if it is a loose fit just wrap a bit of tape around the ends so it's not quite a tight fit. Use the rubbery glue provided to joint the two wing halves together (not forgetting to put the spar in lol) Hinge the elerons withit the GF tape supplied. I stuck my servos in with hot glue, in fact most of my wildthing is done with hot glue.
The taping is the tedious bit but a tip here is to wipe eack strip of GF tape with Acetone after it's been stuck done, this removes the release agent for the tape so the next layer stick much better.
The coloured tape is a UV shield to protect the GF tape.
The build is simple but time consuming and if you use the wifes kitchen scissors to cut the GF tape be prepared for a row! the GF tape makes them blunt real quick, better to use a blade.
Hope that helps.
Good luck and look forward to seeing you on the slope.

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
At the risk of seeming to say the obvious, I found the instructions to be 'exactly right'. By this I mean that although it may sound stupid to say so but they are. The best way is to read them slowly and carefully at least twice. Few instructions are 'exactly right' these days so we get used to glancing through them and then doing it as seems one should but in this case follow them 'exactly' and you will end up with the perfect plane
Servos. No need for super precision or particularly high torque and almost anything will be fast enough. They have to be standard size to fit the cutouts in the plane and the instructions say to cut off the mounting tabs at either end as these get in the way. There's a high risk, as Marty says, of them being trashed so if it was me something like Futaba S3001 type of thing are a tenner each and plenty good enough
May the dents (in the ground) be with you

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
Thanks Marty.
Just started on it, and sanded/ rounded the edges
Going to use the futaba as better/stronger servos, and only sitting in a box gathering dust and wont cost me anything, just just found some arms for them. Star ones so will have to cut some lugs off.
Going to use the ar6200 as full range and prob install satilite as well as cant use dsm2 satilite on my FBL (has to be DSMX). This is only gathering dust aswell..
Just created a new model a plane one on Dx8 to check servos etc.. before chopping mounting off and installing, haven't got a clue what wing type to use as never even looked at a plane on my TX.
Cheers

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
Neil, as I remember, the Wildthing is similar in design to the "reaper" from flying wings.
Reapers construction manual is below if it helps you any with the build!

6mm is fine and you don't have to be exact, just get the thing put together, so we can have a play next time am home..

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
As Zaidy said the amount of overlap is not critical. A quick tip when you come to put the coulered tape on is to first cote the GF tape with a spray on contact adhesive, ( the type carpet fitters use). This will help the covering tape adhere better. If you want an even better looking finish you could cover it in Pro Film instead of using the coloured tape.

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
If you're going to use it for it's intended purpose ie combat on the Orme I wouldn't spend the extra on Profilm cus it's only going to get battered shitless.

I'll bet he'll knock you out of the sky before the day is over! He's like that, and oh so sneaky! lolNeil wrote:

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
DONT spray with glue before you apply the coloured tape, as it will never come off later when you WILL want to eventually recover with new coloured tape. It really isnt required, and as Allan said earlier, just follow the instruction booklet EXACTLY. Alan Head has been making and flying these things since Adam were a lad, and he knows EXACTLY what is required.

Re: Big box of foam and tape ????
Been messing on and off with it tonight.. Servos in working correctly.. its all glass taped... wings stuck together... should be getting a battery from component shop tommoz.
Anyway. New found respect for you wing type build people It takes alot longer and is more fiddley to cover a glider/plane than I thought just with tape.
Thanks for all the tips...hopefully will get finished or working tommoz...
Proberly... not before more questions
Cheers

Correct. Full on attack by my WT from below, saw Neil's beautiful new shiny WT smacked down behind the hill, under variable control - one snapped elevon horn shows it was a superb hit, and that he did VERY well on his first outing to the slope - especially getting it down at all with only one working elevon! His revenge came in the form of him experimenting with inverted flight on my model, and despite my best efforts to get control back from him, my WT lodged itself on a ledge down a sheer drop to the road ( Pier site )
No way were we risking that recovery, so we drove around the road to see if it could be spotted, and old eagle eyes sees something orange and black lying about 100 foot up the bank.
The wind must have dislodged it, so mountain goat Neil climbed up the bank and recovered. Cheers again mate - its getting a habit this - rescuing my models from tricky places LOL.
I'll leave Neil to tell whether he enjoyed his first foray into fixed wing/slope, but I think the smiles said it all.

Very Big thanks tim.....YEP shock horror... I did enjoy these things that fly with wings... Climbing that bank wasn't so much fun. But did feel a little
guilty for causing the loss of his Wildthing.
Anyway..The next time you wipe me out. It will be the last time I climb a cliff or tree for you. .
Big thanks again and will be out again soon (when i've fix my wild thing LOL )
