I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ .

Looks to me like the Raider got the worst of it and that the 'tag could have flown away but in the split seconds he desided to get out of there (canopy pops almost straight away) unless of course he lost tail control.

Re: BBD lost at flying legends
In the P51, the services to the tail run along the floor of the rear fuselage (according to the cutaway drawing I have in an old magazine here). By services, I mean things like the control cables for the elevator and rudder and stuff. The chances are that if the impact was on the underside of the P51, then these would have been damaged or possibly even severed. The pilot would have known pretty damn quickly that there was no chance of making a safe landing, and that bailing out was the only option.
The skyraider pilot did a bloomin good job of getting it back under control after the impact too....

You mean I'm sharp, chunky and generally used with chopping type action on large chunks of meat?

I should imagine with the thump the tail end took, he was struggling! Wonder why the long pause between canopy popping and ejection though? there seemed to be a hell of a gap!

how long would it take you to undoo all your belts and stuff while hurtaling towards the floor?
I belive it was a jump out ejection as aposed to rocket assisted of now adays.

Never mind rocket assisted, mine would have been flatulance assisted, and torn the belt shackles out from the frame too!
