I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ .

Clean up a glow engine?
Anyone know the best way to clean a seriously gummed up glow engine? Been reading some other forums and one from the states suggests the best thing to do is simmer the engine in antifreeze for a couple of hours! Seems bloody extreme to me - and not sure the misses would be too pleased with me knackering up one of her pans!

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
Cheers for the reply John.
The motor is really gummed inside and out - its almost like its full of treacle! (and been stuck up someones backside!)
Want to clean it up on the outside a bit too not just free it up so might have to take a visit to Save with Dave for a cheap pan! Got a feeling he stocks cheap antifreeze too actually now you suggested it!
Anyone else have any other suggestions before I break the gas bbq out to heat it?

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
I've heard leaving it to soak in parafin for a couple of days works. I should imagine soaking in WD40 would be slightly better
Do not use anything caustic, especially sodium hydroxide - it attacks aluminium. Both the pan as well as the engine!

The best stuff I've found so far is GT85.
It's mostly used by the mountain biker crowd for cleaning and degreasing chains ect.
It is similar to WD40 and can be found at most model shops and halfords, who nearly always have buy 2 get one free on it.
It's amazing stuff.
Danny.

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
I have just the thing for you: it was suggested to me by Allan Warner. I have used it on few engines now and it works a treat.
Fairy Power Spray, it comes in a green spray bottle.
Spray and leave it for 20 min, then clean with an old tooth brush with warm water in comes out spotless, if you have stubborn stains (you know the ones stubby ;-0) ! Use a green scotch bright gently to remove them!!
You can get it from any supermarket in the cleaning section.

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
As Zaid said, it's good stuff. If it's gummed inside as well I would do a complete strip down and dismantle - useing heat(from a heat gun/hairdrier) and some parafin or similar to free it up. Then item by item wipe as clean as possible, spray and leave then wash with hot soapy water. After thoroughly dry additional applications of the power spray can be used. When satisfied make shure every thing is dry (warm with heatgun/hairdryer) and reassemble with oil. If its as bad as you say and has ball bearings they will probably require replacing. Try HERE

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
Cheers all - and thanks for the heads up about antifreeze fumes Brian.
I switched my pc off about half 10 so didnt get to read half your posts unfortunately, so long story short, I gave the antifreeze treatment a crack on the gas BBQ ring this afternoon! Stripped the motor down first, removed the gaskets and had it simmering away nicely for about 3 hours. Seems to have cleaned it up quite well and freed the crank. Still got a couple of caked on stains on the outer casing though so will get a green scouring pad on it with some Fairy power spray!
Cheers again all - will post some before and after pictures of the antifreeze treatment incase anyone wondered how it panned out without any scrubbing!

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
The Lazy man's approach (me)
Warm the engine in an oven for about 20 minutes on a low heat, so it never gets too hot to touch, 60 deg C ?. That will start the degumming process and it will then turn over fairly easiy.
Then rinse the engine with thin machine oil or "SAE 10 Fork Oil repeatedly and keep on turning it over intil it is completely free.
Don't use water and keep the engine stored full of oil containing a corrosion inhibiter like three in one.
It doesn't involve any dismantling, (which can do more harm than good) and you won't risk damaging the gaskets if you strip it down. (and they are probably unobtainable quickly anyway)

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
If anyone was interested, here are some piccies of my antifreeze engine clean up. Cant believe the engine has come out as well as it did without any scrubbing- it turns over really well now and looks almost new!

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
I think this thread is an elaborate method of cunningly disguising a new engine purchase....

Re: Clean up a glow engine?
I thought that but there are gum marks on the underside of the exhaust before the clean up & there still there in the clean pic & who would by an OS 40 FP these days.
TBA the engine hasn't had much use by the look of it, more of abuse by not cleaning me thinks
