I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ Smile .

Post by Marty 2010-05-19, 04:46

After seeing a certain member using a tether made up from old bits of string and bailing wire I have decided to "do my bit" for the club.
I will bring home some tethers that I have had a new Deck Hand make after teaching him to splice Smile
There will be two sizes with a soft eye in each end:
1.5m x 5mm polyprop & 2m x 10mm polyprop.
I will stick them in the flight box and anyone who needs one can just take one.
If there are any bigger ones required let me know.

That's a very kind gesture, cheers Marty!

Actually, would you mind bringing a bit of unspliced 10mm at some point, I wouldn't mind learning how to splice a rope myself Smile Payment can be as many flights with my Blaster/MiniFireworks as you like!

I would have said it was your choice of models that makes the field a dangerous place, I mean, some of them fast & low passes last night you were doing, were just mental. How the Health and Safety chaps haven't banned that sort of flying, is beyond me.*

Anyway, Back on topic, do you need any tools to splice rope?

I've got some of them, just need to be shown how to use them (and that sounds like a cue for many jokes indeed!)

Ah Ha! a man who knows the ropres Smile
Andy, I'll let you know when I will be at the field next ... I pay off on the 31st. I'm hoping the club meeting will be on the first Thursday in june? that being the case I can show any one who's interested how to splice ... It is so simple once you've been showed. As regards tools, Polypop is a very soft rope and as Rich say's, it can easily be spliced in hand. Smile
Now all we need is for an "Engineering" type chappie to volunteer to make some hold fasts Razz

Nice one, I look forward to it Marty.

The club night is the first Thursday in June, the 3rd if my calendar is on the right page! I'm having a bit of a mental block today, but I think that we have a club night every thursday at the field throughout Summer, but I can't remember if that includes June. I'll check when I get home tonight, unless someone confirms before then.

What is a hold fast anyway? Smile

Ah, the reason I asked, is that I was sort of thinking that a Hold Fast was along the same lines as a Sky hook, or a Long Weight, or an imperial adjustable wrench, or tartan paint etc etc.....

I'd feel naked without my whiteboard...

It is. I have hit that box on more than one occasion, the best one being a coupel of months ago, I hit it whilst taxiing out, before I had even flown the model!

The tethers look good Marty, thanks for that. Give me a couple more tries at splicing, and mine will be just as neat Smile

lol, for referance the teathers are in the other box next to the BBQ.

but your right the fence box is a bugger, i hit it with my Cap last year while taxing, caught the wing tip and it span round killing a £40 carbon prop and a £50 Carbon Spinner.

However my Dads was better, while test flying a model for a new member landed stright into it!
