I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ .

Zaid do a google for TSR2 its a fasinating story, 2 built most advanced fighter/bomer of its day, project canceled because the Gov bottled it!
Only one flew i think, and there is one at RAF Cosford in the musem. the guys were due for another test fight (IIRC no 12) there was a problem so they delayed the flight till the afternoon, over lunch the plug was pulled and she never flew again

Re: My Next model
If I remember correctly we then bought F111's from America. I guess we'll buy some Boeing AWAC's a few years from now.

Re: My Next model
And of course, for our yet to be built aircraft carriers with no planes, I would think THESE are in the frame.

Ahh yes we did but that project was then delyed a further 10 years
Nearly as pathetic as the helis we had delivered in 2001 for 259milion but didnt fly them untill 2007 because of the wrong avionics, not to worry, it was only another 127 million to bring the 8 chopers up to UK spec They didnt even enter service till 2009 (ordered in 1995)
Add these small things to the carriers with no planes and the brand new multi billion pound sub that managed not to see the ground
United Kingdom a super power, my bottom

I worked at Avro/Hawker Siddeley/ British Aerospace design offices over many years. Vulcan/ BA146/ HS 748 &780/ Nimrod/ Vulcan and Victor Tankers.
At Chadderton they brought in some finished TSR2 Titanium CNC sculpted parts including a 3d, one piece, fuselage centre box structure for us all to see just what was possible. Fantastic piece of work and so light and delicate. Do have a look at the one at Cosford next time you go there. Great shame it was all shelved.
In those days, each government change heralded conract cancellations and redundancy. So no change there.
By then Doff and I had a family so I decided to get out of the aeroplane business altogether and get something more secure, maybe even a "Soap Powder Factory" . I joined ICI. They even had machines made from just wood and leather with brass nails for manufacturing mining explosive detonators at Nobel.

Re: My Next model
I'm 99% certain the TSR2 project was not shelved entirely because of the Goverment bottling it. I'm pretty sure there were quite a few insurmountable (at the time) technical reasons for cancelling it too. The main one was the amount of electronic trickery that would have been required to meet the design spec, and the fact that such technology just didn't exist, or was under development, in a format that would have physically fitted onboard, with the required levels of reliability. It was mostly down to the design spec having pretty much every imaginable "wow" factor added to it, without any real assessment of whether it was possible.

Re: My Next model
There are many stories covering the TSR2 sperating fact from fiction is very dificult but the fact there was a goverment power change just prior to the cancelation that version gets my vote, however you are right there were more technical reasons stated to.
But the fact was the plane worked, it flew several times so a respec on avionics would have suficed im sure

Re: My Next model
Indeed it did fly. Bloomin ugly thing, although everyone knows that ugly things work best (like me for example)......
I still think a trick was missed by not continuing with the development of the Boulton Paul P111 though....
