I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ Smile .

    Hopefully not literally Pete?!

I do like Biplanes. Something I've not had a dabble with yet, and something I feel the need to correct soon. Perhaps a Biplane could be the airframe of choice for a dirty great radial engine, something else I feel the need to sample before I retire!

    Cheers

You might like the current project in my workshop then Andy.....Hangar 9 Sopwith Camel ( electrified of course ) with full onboard sound system of a big radial engine.
Flashing machine guns ( as per Spit ) but this time with accompanying sounds too Very Happy

    Very nice!

Slightly off topic, but related nonetheless, but I actually drew up a few designs for an Electric Radial motor. Instead of a number of cylinders around the the crankshaft, it was a number of motors, all geared together to drive a common output shaft.

It turns out it adds a fair bit of weight though (the mechanics and housings), and generally, a single big motor is a much better solution in an airborn model....

    Tim
Tell us more about the Sopwith Camel
    It sounds electrifying !
    Have you any pics
Is the Engine simulation a Le Rhone or something else more modern ?
How many watts is the loudspeaker system ?
Of course the pilot has a scarfe ???

No Pics yet paul - the SS is indeed of the big Le Rhone radial - although I am still awaiting delivery of the sound chip. I am going to try a single 25Watt loudspeaker first, and the biggest challenge is deciding on fxing and location - I am still hopoing to get the unit right up in the cowl ( which is huge ), but need to be aware of magnet proximity to the motor.
I was going to use 4S 4000 mahr lipo but changed horses mid stream to 5s2p M1 cells, which again will be mde up from single cells in ring shape to fit as far as posss up front, to avid the need for 2 lb ballast box supplied wih the model! I am aiming for scale speed so therefore will be using a large diameter ( 16" ) prop on a low Kv 1000Watt outrunner and bench testing looks fine so far with approx just 600 Watts on a 10" pitch prop. Pitch speed will be pretty slow ( as per real size ) @circa 5000+ RPM.
I will just need to watch the prop torque effect !!
AUW is estimated at 8 - 9lb so she will be flying ( WW1 style ) on about 6- 70 Watts per lb.
Heres a link to a retailer whio is doing the sound modules.http://www.brchobbies.co.uk/?page=shop&item=1065

You probably know more about model related sound systems than I, Tim, but I reckon the key is making best use of the xxxWatt loudspeaker that you choose. More watts is good, but optimising a decent sound box (think speaker enclosure) will go a long way to getting a decent sound out of it.

Most of the decent HiFi speakers work really well, because they optimise the enclosure the speaker sits in. Think about the Bose waveguide systems. Really small and compact, yet pack an incredible aural punch. SWMBO's Dad has got one, if it wasn't so damn expensive, I would consider one for my workshop Smile Smile

yes indeed Andy - a good baffle board at least should be deployed, and it may well be that after testing, I choose to mount it inside the airframe and use it as a sounding board.
The amp is 40 watt capable, so headroom to add a second speaker in series if necessary ( impedance output of amp is minimum 8 ohm )
