Wouldn't go as far as to say it's illegal Sam but deffinately not reccomended and most likely un-insured, foolhardy in the extreme

What's going on there may not be actually illegal. The flying looked precarious and unsafe, obviously not an experienced flyer.
The BMFA insurance (and most other public liability cover) is only valid provided permission to use a facility has first been given by the land owner or person in charge of the property.

So if they did not have permission AND there were an incedent or accident, the flyers would get the book thrown at them AND finish up paying for all damage and injury claims out of their own pocket. Not to mention trespassing on private property or breaking local authority by-laws.
Not to even think of the damage it would bring to the reputation of model flying.
The papers would have a ball making headlines about an idiot flying a model dangerously
