I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ Smile .

Seem to recognise the model, if I'm not mistaken it was a free plan in Aeromodeller mag back in the early 70's. I built one at the tender age of 13. Mine was powered by a DC Bantam glow engine. I have no recollections of what happend to it though. Smile

Well done that man! Yes, its a 'Hawk' from '74 Aeromodeller so I'm told

A bit of searching and you can find the plan online as a free download

Aeromodeller June '69 'The Hawk' by Dorrell as per my Aeromodeller index. One I've not got. Searched Outerzone, VinPlanDex and MyHobbystores etc. Where did you find the free download?

Actually I was told that its available as a d/l and failed to qualify my statement.... I have had a quick look and haven't found it however, there are hundreds of plans at the sites you mention, especially the first two, plus the rest of the net so I suspect quite likely its more a matter of finding it. Dave, the owner, built his from the original plan, which he's still got. If you want a copy I can drop him an email

It's proving difficult to find, although I am waiting on a response from a couple of forums. Just like another one thats some what elusive. A little 049 swept wing tailless job called 'Tadpole'.

Thanks Mel. Got that link but was looking for a free download site, still with these sort of things if I buy then I put on the free sites. The sellers of these old plans don't give anything to the designers as the're out of copyright.
I believe that aeromodelling heritage that is out of copyright should be free to all and that which is still in copyright does not infringe any laws as long as there is no financial gain involved if its given/exchanged freely.
I've got the RCM&E for May '65 which has the Tadpole plan in it, just can't get to it. Its under piles of stuff in my store/5th bedroom, must sort out and put up some shelving(lots).
By the way where did all this free flight enjoyment take place?

Its near a place called Mynydd llandegai near Bangor. We call it the swamp... Its horrible land - mostly marsh grass and spagnum moss with the occasional rock . Some bits are more grassy and heather clumps. Very uneven and soggy on the whole. Sheep bones litter the place. But you can dump models into the marsh grass or soggy bits and there are no trees , fences or hedges so you can get down fast and low in the weeds. We have flown there for years and all sorts of models inc a T240 and other large models. All hand launched and a springy if abrupt landing. Not so springy if you find a rock. Some nice views of Electric Mountain dam wall and Penrhyn Quarry at Bethesda + Snowdonia in general

These pics make it look smoother and better than it is: -

Hi all,
Dave here, builder of 'The Hawk' - glad that you liked it. I had the original magazine from when I was a kid (now sadly missing) - but still had most of the free plan which I taped together. This will be the fourth one that I've built over the years, and they all flew well. Allan keeps trying to get me to put more fuel in it - but it's a hard slog across that moorland!
You can get a copy of the original plan from here, but it's a bit steep for what was a free plan.
http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/browser/2462/power-free-flight

I wouldn't bother with the 'pottyproductions' one...I did try myself a while back, but he couldn't seem to do it.
I think that I scanned the original to send to Allan, and I will have a look, if anyone's interested.
cheers...
Dave

I'm interested in a scan. If it's half reasonable somebody on the forums or free plans sites could clean it up.

Got a scan of the plan and article via an intermediary contact on another forum. Going to offer it to the free plans sites and see if they want it.
Allan, Dave let me know if you want a copy.

Allan - many thanks for sending the scans. The last one looks to be complete, and is far better than my own efforts which I had gathered together.

I'm not sure that I would like to use a precious little diesel in the Hawk, even if it might be nice to have. A Cox 049 (all of around £18) from Den's Models does the job well.

Cricky! I got my sure starts a few years back when they were just a few quid each.
A thought. Now that you've got a good scan its possible to slightly enlarge the plan to carry a little extra weight - small 2.4 Rx (4gm), 9gm servo and a light battrey. Make two of the larger fuselage sides and space them apart with an outline frame and minimal internal structure. Make the space apart just enough to contain the gear, say 3/8"-1/2". Mount servo in such a maner so as to drive a torque rod to the rudder. Get a single channel emulator from PhilG and connect up to a FrSky hack modul. Then go fly single channel/free flight with a slightly bigger DIESEL- no more yomping across the swamp or fear of loosing that precious engine!

Well, yes, the thought has crossed my mind - but there is something delightfully simple about flying FF, with the added excitement of not knowing for sure where it's going to go. Bit like Allan Patrick's flying.

Searching for a vid I made of Dave using original pushbutton single channel tone RC with an elastic band escapement, which I can't find at the moment, I came across these swamp antics....
