I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ Smile .

    Evening all,

As you are probably aware, Electrons turn me on. Electric is the only source of motive power for my planes, and although I have tried an IC plane (Prangster with an SC46 onboard), it never really tickled my fancy in a way that a few volts and amps can Shocked Well, I always think it is wrong to slate something, unless you have tried it. So, I'm going to kill several birds with one stone now (hopefully), and build/assemble/steal me a new plane. A plane that is big. A plane that is powered by a petrol motaaah. A plane that can tow.

Sooo, I am going to build me a Greenley. Apparently, it used to be the LMA trainer, but John Greenfield (the designer)has done a few variants that are optimised for tugging people off (ahem!). free plans are here: http://scalesoaring.co.uk/TUGS/Plans/TugPlans.html which is nice. I am thinking that the Greenley SD (88") is going to be the best one to build, nice and big, but not too big to fit in my car/garage. I think it will need modifying to be a 2 piece wing, but other than that, nice and simple.

Now, I bow down to those that are knowledgable in the dark arts that are petrol motors, and seek a recommendation. I need an engine for it, and (honestly!) I haven't got a clue. How does something like a Zenoah 62 sound? Too big? Too heavy? What about these DL50 jobbies I hear about occasionally? All I want is something that is easy to start, and RELIABLE with a capital everything. Don't forget I am used to Electric stuff, where things generally just work, with minimum fuss Smile

    Over to you guys!

    Cheers

    Andy,

I'm sure there is a more attractive model somewhere in this world, even with your lower than average standards I'm sure you coud do better than that, use a DL50 23 x 8 prop & a semi symetrical wing section not as flat bottomed as the Wilga, lighten the whole thing & away you go, something like what Leigh had Roys "wot now" absolutely perfect for a DL50 £229 from DLUK as cheap as HK at the moment with exchange rate.

    Hi Andy,
As a newby to petrol also may I suggest the forums (RCUNIVERSE etc) and look up the engines you fancy, I found them very informative, to identify any known faults etc. In the mean time, as I got no response to my open question on engines I put to the forum, I did my own enquiries and got the latest DL50 (spec quotes 30lb of thrust affraid - should pull the odd glider or two affraid ). I got, what I think, was a good deal from a UK company:- DL50 + spare NGK spark plug + prop drilling jig for £227.50 inc postage Very Happy . As there is no substitute for seeing items in the flesh and if, as we live near each other, you want to get your hot sweaty hands on the engine for an up close look see let me know.

Andy DL 50 would be flavour of the moment, but that model man, it's a Blot on the Landscape, as Rich says there has to be something a little easier on the eye. Is your main purpose to have a tug ? and do you want to build.

    Hey guys!

The main purpose is to have an airframe that is rugged, reliable, and able to haul junk into the sky. Tugging is one application, as is lofting a camera, etc. AS much as I like electrons, I have to admit that big electrickery powered stuff, is just not practical for a long flying session, hence the desire to try a petrol engine Smile

As for the airframe, then I concur that that the Greenley SD is no stunner. That said, neither am I!!! afro (I love this afro smiley!). I am open to suggestions on other airframes though! As I said, I am not at all fussy Smile I don't mind building, so long as it is not a looong and complicated build. That is what I quite like about the Greenley SD. Simple sheeted foam wing + ply box fuzz + sheet tail feathers = quick build for Andy!

Something like Leigh's "Wot now" would be good, are plans/parts available?

Cheers for the offer Allan, I'll give you a shout in the week. I'm away with work again for at least today and tomorrow Sad

The wot not is basicly a scaled up wot 4 from chris foss, I belive that one was off Alan Hawes of AH designs, The bigger pink one I fly defently is, Alan hasnt been to well of late so i doubt a kit will be availible although u may be able to get a plan out of him.

As for motor, I wouldnt bother buying a G62 although i have one in my cap the way forward is the DL50 very little reports of bad ones and for the monney they kind of make DA look alittle silly, couple that with the flexi header and pipe that are on Ebay from the DL factory for £70 and your onto a winner

I've heard mixed reports about Falcon too Leigh. Well, up until this morning I hadn't, but a bit of research has uncovered a few "issues"....

I would only get a Cub, if I could finish it in a totally off the wall colour scheme. Something like the German WW2 Winter/Snow Camo scheme would be good. Anything but Cub Yellow.... Shocked So what's a good cub kit then? Nice and big!

Wel I'll add to the list of concerns with Falcon. I've had 2 bad experiences with them plus another was just poor business practice. I'd stay away No

    Morning all,

Well, I've looked around, and for some reason I'm still coming back to the Munter that is the Greenley! I like the idea of a Cub, but I really wanted to build this model myself, and that means a long and fairly complex build if I go for a Cub or similar.....

    Cheers

So what would be a good plan or kit to go for then, in your opinion? Something that is going to be nice and strong for me to handle Smile

That's what I am thinking Rich, I know it is Ugly. I'm ugly, so why shouldn't my plane be ugly too?

The chances are heavily in favour of me landing using a fencepost as a speed brake anyway... Shocked heh heh!
