Saturday 7/7/18

2018-07-07, 21:07 by Gary M Jones

I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ Smile .

Welcome to the forum

I like the way you say move up to planes.

The twister sea king will be fine for the indoor season, not really sure about out doors as they don't like any wind. It'll give you a good start on the controls etc.

Our indoor is every Saturday 1300 - 1600 at Rhyl sports centre.

Dependant on what side the throttle stick is will depend on who will teach you the ropes, there will be plenty of guys there on Saturday.

Indoor also on Tuesday evening, at Llysfaen. If you use a buddy lead ( and almost all instructors will want you to do so these days ), then assuming same brand radio gear, it doesn't matter what mode you are on, as the instructor can be different from the pupil IYSWIM.
Welcome BTW

Hi Gareth welcome to our little forum, I've just changed the permitions on the membership format so please try again.

As the guys have said above get down to one of the indoor meets to see what the crack is. A buddy lead is a leading that links two transmitters together to enable one to be the master think duel control in a learner car and your somwere near,

As for planes the choice is really endless but as a minimum high wing and marketed as a trainer will be a good start something like a tudor 40, not pretty but a good starter and we all had to start somwere

Generally, the mini and micro stuff is very hard to fly, and not suited to outdoors - the parkzone Vapor ( strictly indoor ) is easy though, as its slow, yet manouverable - very lightweight, which means easily damaged though.
Get the biggest beginners model you can afford - bigger is easier to fly.

Pay your fees whenever.....but once joined, you must renew by the end of the year or get hit with a late fee. Year runs calendar, so if you are thinking of joining this season, do it asap to get yer money's worth.

Bang on that Tim,

I was thinking along the lines of the Twister Sea King which is likely to come with a small transmitter, usually mode specific.

Hi Gareth,

Welcome to the forum and club!

Ebay is another good source of suitable trainers. The only drawback as that there can be some rubbish however I've seen quite a few good possibilities from time to time. But don't be in too much of a hurry to buy something for the field - it will be a few months yet before the weather is good enough to be worth it

Neither of these is ideal however a couple of possibilities at the moment are: -
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRECEDENT-FLY-BOY-RADIO-CONTROL-TRAINER-PLANE-/321059336058?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item4ac0a0af7a

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRECEDENT-HI-BOY-RADIO-CONTROL-PLANE-WITH-FUTABA-RADIO-GEAR-NEVER-FLOWN-/261159337678?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item3cce4f3ece

Both include engines and radio gear though the first is on 35 MHz. Not a problem as there are plenty of transmitters for this at very low cost or even free. The second hasn't even been flown

Not the most robust models but not bad. They are IC powered and you might prefer electric

Welcome to the Forum Garreth, it's always nice to see some new interest Smile

I can heartily recommend getting down to one of the indoor sessions at the Sports Centre in Rhyl (opposite the football ground), there are usually quite a few members there. The best bit is that you can pick their brains, and ask them loads of questions about what is a good trainer etc.

The best bit of advice I can offer, is to check what you are going to buy, before you buy it! Just whack a post up here, and people can tell you pretty quick whether it is good, great, a bargain, a rip-off etc.

I think you need to make a decision before buying - and that is
1) Are you going to be electric only
2) IC ( "Infernal" Combustion ) only
3) A mixture of both.
Personally, even though I am almost 100% electric, I do think there may be some merit in IC trainers, but ONLY if you think you will want to stick with IC in the future - if you see yourself as electric only, then by all means go for a large electric (EP) trainer, such as the ST Discovery etc. The gear from that, could then be transferred to your next follow on model.
The discovery also uses the very popular 3s 2200mahr liPo battery that is found in many many modelshttp://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&q=st+discovery+trainer&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=9151336414214238286&sa=X&ei=18sCUembDMag0QXF7IHIDg&ved=0CDAQ8wIwAA

I know you are new, thats why I said you need to make a decision Wink
You charge your flight batteries at the field using the charger - powered from a 12V battery, or even the car battery. Most peeps will have several batteries ready charged, with them at the flying session. The price of lipo batteries these days is relatively very low.
Petrol is fine, and popular these days due to the high cost of methanol and nitro fuels, and because many more sizes and makes of petrol engines exist.
As I said, you need to decide whether you think the future ( for you ) is nice clean, quiet electric power, or you relish the idea of noisy, dirty IC models which you will need to de-grease and clean down every time Very Happy
Of course... Im not biased in any way :-)

Depends who's flying em!
Ive seen, and flown several models myself, that flew for only a few seconds Shocked
On a serious note...you will find that 10 minutes is the average flight time of most pilots - and with quick chargers, fast chargeable batteries, and coffee to drink etc...... you will soon be back in the air.
10 minutes is PLENTY long enough for a flight when you are a learner - you will be surprised how exhausted you will be after that amount of high level concentration...and of course, if I teach you, you will be keen to land and run away from the shouting! LOL

On average around 6 to 7 minutes - some models less ( fast EDF jets etc ) around 4 to 5 minutes, slower older style models maybe 10 minutes.
