2018-07-07, 21:07 by Gary M Jones

I was at the field today between 14:00 & 15:00 all on my own , good flying too. There is a dead sheep along the fence line towards the gate from the pits, I saw the farmer so reported this to her. I hope no one had plans for a BBQ Smile .

Morning all.

As I'm sure you are aware, Rhyl are having their own Airshow this year, on Saturday 8th August. I have been approached by Denbighshire Council, and they have asked if any of our members would like to display their models for the day? As far as I am aware it will be a static display, so no flying unfortunately.

They have agreed to provide as much space as we need, and some stewards/barriers to keep the general public from clambering all over everything! I am also working on getting a spot with prime viewing for the air display Smile

All we need to know is who is interested, and what can you bring to show off?!

Cheers

Sounds good that Leigh, much appreciated! If you need a hand, just give me a shout. I'll help sort out the printing too Smile

Just a reminder that the airshow will be a static display unfortunately. Fingers crossed it should mean some good seats for the big planes though!

How much room do you think we should ask for?

Am I correct in thinking the date for the air show is Sat 8 August? The day before the aerotow event, I am willing to help but wonder if at least one committee member should be on the field on Saturday 8th in case some visitors for the aerotow decide to come for the two days.

The Airshow will be just 1 1/2 miles away from the field. (not far in a full size)
Display aircraft may be in the area on days preceding the show. But certainly, all day on the 8th.

I do think we, as a club, need to consider the serious risk our flying models might present to an unsuspecting full size display pilot.

Have we actually got a plan for this ? If not, why not ?

Is someone delegated to direct model flying at the field during the Airshow ?

Has anyone liaised with the organisers about this ?

If my memory serves me correctly, dependant on the size of the event, there will be a temporary ATZ (air traffic control zone ) set up around the display location, possibly with a radius of 2.5 nautical miles and a hight of several thousand feet. Additionally there may be one or two 'pan handles leading into the display zone. If we come within any of the controlled airspace flying wil be a no go. We need some one with contacts at a local airstrip so that we can obtain the official 'Notice to Airmen' published by NATS so be sure of whats going on. Getting on the wrong side of the CAA is not a good idea and can be very costly in the size of the fines.
Its been at least 10 years since I've had any full size involvement so I could be wrong, but I'm sure something like this happend at the Clacton displays. Perhaps John O-D could advise.

PS Even if we are not in conflict with any temporary controlled airspace it would be advisable to notify the local airtraffic centre controlling the aircraft of our pressence.

Is the display an all day affair ?If not then suggest no flying 45 mins each side of display time. The Police,Heli div will have all the CAA details.Usually there is a temp restriction with times..some last all day eg Fairford in Glos. Also the council will know.I would have thought the club Sec or someone on the committee would have been notified.Especially if we are a registered Flying Club.NOTAMS are on the CAA website. Very Happy

ps. give Liverpool ATC a call or Chester City aka Broughton.

Alan has the right idea..notify ,I would think Liverpool ATC
the committee should appoint

just looked at my Aero Chart 1:500000 can not find any ! Model flying sites.
Nearest full size are the Heli site next door,Bryngwyn Bach south of A55 a Spitfire based there and Rhedyn Coch Micro Lite site North of A55 both of last two near McDonalds.
Lleweni Parc Denbigh also but not operational.
Would have thought the BMFA would have all the info and distribute to local clubs but perhaps asking too much.

The Aero-tow (and any other event) has always been sanctioned by the committee on the understanding that the event complys with club policy on being in the best interest of the club and all it's members. The club also incorporates the BMFA rule book and ANO regulations into any event.

I am not an expert on this subject of size of air space restrictions, but aware that they do apply. For example when there is an IMAC event an exemption certificate is obtained (from the CAA or ATC?), otherwise that event cannot take place. Model clubs normally fly below the required notifictaion altitude, which without looking it up is 300 feet.

For the record I haven't organised the aerotow for two years, it was taken over by Mark Barnes in way of sending out flyers & posting on various forums inviting as many people as possible, I always attend if I'm not doing anything else, although the weather is not always good to us at Rhyl for any event.

I'm of the understanding that the Aerotow was to take place on Sunday 9th of August therefore there is no clash of dates with the Rhyl airshow.

As far as I'm aware the Rhyl full size display is on the Saturday whereas the planned aerotow main day is Sunday with possible off the peg flying for visiting pilots on Saturday, hardly a major issue I would have thought.

Is the committee running this event or not Question As far as I'm aware we've never applied for a waver before (includes the issuing of NOTAMS) for the aerotow Suspect There's always been one in place for the IMAC comp this is applied for by Dave Lucas of IMAC.

Denbigh Glider Club site is still operational. I was only speaking to the owner of Lleweni Parc yesterday on a matter. They are flying powered glider from there and it is a designated operational airfield for cross country gliders to land. And no the club can't use it, I've asked.
