Warning - Ebay and Paypal fees!

I know a lot of our members do a lot of buying and selling on Ebay, but can I just warn you about the hidden charges and fees - I have just been stung - BIG TIME.

Long story short, After much debate I sold my Raptor helicopter on Ebay (after no bites on the BMFA website) to fund other projects, and managed to get a tidy sum of £510! - Well chuffed!
Guy was very keen and paid within the hour using Paypal - No probs you would think - everyday transaction...........

Here is the bad bit - for selling on Ebay, I have now to pay an insertion fee of £1.30, 40p Buy it now fee, £1.20 for adding 3 extra photos and a 10% final sale value fee added on too! - all in all to sell on Ebay it is going to cost me £53.90!

As if this wasnt bad enough, I have just found out that Paypal have also just charged me £17.54 for allowing the guy to pay me through them!

All in all, im going to have to pay £71.44 in Fees for a simple, straight forward transaction.

I dont mind paying to use paypal and Ebay but, sorry, I think this is just taking the P*@s!

I know a lot of peeps ( me included ) are using fleabay a LOT less these days - a classic case of stealth charges, and getting too damn greedy.
PayPal are of course, now wholly owned by Ebay, and things are going the same way.

The majority of reputable retailers absorb the paypal cost, although it probably gets into the price somewhere along the line, many moons ago sellers used to put a little bit of small print in the text asking for a % of the price to be added for PayPal charges maybe it's worth putting this back in again

Fleabay banned this practice - any ad showing it, is removed immediately

Paypal usually charge around 4% for the priveledge. As for eBay, it all depends what you start the bidding at. That's why you see expensive items starting at 99p!! I've been stung too!!

The paypal typical charge is 3.4% plus 20p for each transaction where you receive money that is not marked as a gift. The fee structure is clearly readable on their website in the help section. Ebay fees vary depending on the category you list in, the final selling price and a few other things too. In some categories they limit the amount of P&P you can charge too (for example, selling DVDs). Again, their fees structure is clearly readable in the help sections, so it is hardly stealth charging. Buyer beware and all that (or in this case, seller beware). One way to look at it, is to consider if a fee for advertising your items to the millions of people who use Ebay.....

I had the same thing last year when saving up for my 700.over the couple of months I was building up my paypal account paypal took just over £400 which was quite a shock.
I have to say though it was all there in writing,I just couldn't be bothered to read it,lol.
I get emails from paypal regularly with updates about changing fees and stuff,but again I just delete them.

The thing to do is take it into account when selling,for example I always put free postage in the ad now and just put the buy it now price up by roughly half what the postage is,so I'm covering 50% of the postage.

What's amazing is that for many many people - ebay still is THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO BUY stuff
To be fair - paypal fees are quite the same like when using credit card terminal - so no complains here.
But ebay fees are just crazy :/
some savings are possible - if you business and VAT reg - then you save 20% (ebay is registered in france I believe - so VAT is 0% then)
another 20% (up to 30) can be saved if you are top seller (but that's for business again)
Small savings can be made if you host your pic's elsewhere and just give links.
The biggest saving is if you manage to convince the buyer to ... cancel the transaction - but that works when you pay cash on collection .
The big advantage of using ebay is that it is easy to be seen by hundreds of potential buyers with almost no afford at all - and I believe they charge so much also for that reason.
To cheer you up - it's still cheaper than similar polish service called "allegro"

I agree the charges certainly aren't hidden, but to that extent they arent really brought to your attention either - nowhere along the line does it say - "if your item sells for your asking price, your charges are........."
Its my own fault for not looking into it more, but as Danny says its just one of those things that you never look at - maybe I need to start reading the small print.
My gripe is the sheer cost of putting your item for sale (roughly 14%) - 20 or 30 quid I would be peeved but gladly pay it for the sale - £72 quid? Just greedy fat cats taking the P in my opinion!
Just wanted to make other people who might fall into the same trap as me to beware!

Couldnt justify the money I had ploughed into it really - (that and the fact that you hearlessly abandoned me! ) - just wanted to free up some cash for a bit of fixed wing stuff really thats all - still got my two 450's, although Zaidy threw aspersions on my sexuality for owning them yesterday!

About to take my 250 off Ebay to get away from their charges - and bugger me if it didnt sell for full asking price before I could click the button!

Oh well, At least I sold it, but that means shed more charges coming my way now then!
